COLD & FLU

The common cold and the flu are both contagious respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses. Both can cause a stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, and cough, but the flu tends to be more severe.

Symptoms
Cold Usually milder than the flu, colds mainly affect the nose and throat, and appear gradually.

Flu
Can include a fever or feeling feverish, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and a cough. Flu symptoms can appear quickly within a few hours.

Treatment
Rest: Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated.
Pain relievers: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) can help with pain and fever.
Decongestants: Nasal sprays, drops, or tablets can help with congestion.
Cough medicine: Vapor rubs can help with chesty coughs in children.

Prevention
Wash your hands often. Avoid close contact with people who have a cold or the flu. Get the flu vaccine each year.

When to see a doctor
If you have a high temperature or don't feel well enough to do your normal activities, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.
