URINARY TRACT INFECTION

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that affects the urinary tract, which includes the bladder, uretha, and kidneys. UTIs can be painful and uncomfortable, but they are usually treated with antibiotics and pass within a few days.


Symptoms
• Pain or burning when urinating • Frequent urination • Back or side pain • High fever • Shaking and chills • Nausea • Vomiting • Pelvic pain or pressure • Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying

Causes
• Bacteria from the skin or rectum entering the urethra
• Conditions that block the urinary tract, such as kidney stones
• Conditions that make it difficult to empty the bladder, such as an enlarged prostate or constipation
• Urinary catheters
• A weakened immune system
• Not drinking enough fluids
• Not keeping the genital area clean and dry

Treatment
• A healthcare provider can determine if you have a UTI and what antibiotic you need
• Antibiotics usually work in 3 days to 6 weeks
• You may also be asked to drink plenty of water

Who is affected?
• UTIs are very common, especially in women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB)
• Men and people assigned male at birth (AMAB) can also get UTIs, as well as children
